The Autistic Refugee

We are but lonely nomads seeking refuge from every corner of society

The global society

Stateless

Nationless

Homeless

No country will take us

No person will love us

No peace will befall us

No community will accept us

No organisation will hire us

No parent or teacher will understand us

No heart will heal us

We lie in wait for hopeless eternity

For centuries upon end

Hungry for love and affection

Desperate for understanding

We long to rise amongst the masses

But

Instead

We wilt, wither, and die on the pavement of ashes

In cornerstones and alleyways

On side streets and cul de sacs

In asylums and institutions

We seek refuge from this millennia-long war against ableism, discrimination, bias, stigma, and stereotype

We shiver before our lonely campfire

Frostbite

With but pennies in our pocket

Ragged clothes

Weary

Scared

Longing to be taken in by anyone, be it a community or Samaritan

Begging for the warm heart of a stranger

But our pleas fall on deaf ears

And will

Til the end of time

Unless we destroy who we are and become one with you
